This week's guest blogger is Amy Gilligan. She discusses how far Muhammad was pushed into the Hijra vs how far he was pulled to Madinah.
An AO1 question on this content might ask you to examine the different push and pull factors of the Hijra.
An AO2 question on this content might ask you to evaluate how far Muhammad was pushed or pulled. In this post Amy argues that Muhammad was more pushed.
In 662 CE, Muhammad and his companions began their journey to Madinah in order to encourage the development of Islam on a new platform. Muslims and scholars alike often evaluate the reasons of this migration and I will briefly in this blog.
In my opinion, Muhammad was more pushed from Makkah than pulled to Madinah. I think this as I don’t think Madinah was the perfect area in order to establish Islam in; there were many hypocrites who didn’t actually accept Islam, just Muhammad as a leader. In addition, although Madinah offered economic benefits, Muhammad was a humble man so he wouldn’t have seen this as a priority for his migration.
The only thing that I believe brought Muhammad to Madinah opposed to any other area was the pledges he experienced along with the almost certainty that the Jews would accept him as they were expecting a prophet to arrive soon.
I think Muhammad was significantly pushed into the Hijra as, without the violence and torture from the Makkans, he would not have left his comforts of family and regularity of his home town. Islam would not have migrated to Madinah for its benefits without the rejection of Makkah.
