This week's guest blogger Lydia Crompton. Lydia discusses the treatment and persecution of Muhammad and his companions in his home town of Makkah from the period of 613CE when he first went public with his message to 622CE when he emigrated to Madinah.
You can expect to discuss this topic in questions looking at the persecution of Muhammad in Makkah, Muhammad's public ministry in Makkah or the events leading to the Hijra.
Hey Moon’s Theologians,
Today we are going to discuss the treatment of Muhammad in Makkah, his harsh treatment was due to him full filling his duties to prophet hood, it was these ideas and views that made people dislike him and question their way of life. At this time people belonged to tribes it was within them tribes that they were ordered as a clan based system. This was according to ancestry history, if you all had the same grandfather you be grouped the same. It was Muhammad that challenged this he claimed that Islam was not new but the original religion, this confused peoples whole way of life. It also disorientated the way they would pray it was believed that there were many gods, one for each situation if you will in which you found yourself in. Islam also promoted the importance of one true God, Allah should be the one and only that you pray and commit to.
Muhamad was asking people to turn away from their way of life and join something that went against everything they believe. And for this I believe to be the reason him and his people faced such brutality, such as mockery he would be named a liar, magician and insane. Not only was this embarrassing but it lead to further humiliation they would tie a rope round his neck and drag him on the floor whilst he worshipped, throw rubbish at him whilst he walked, thrown innards of a camel thrown on him, this showed large disrespect. It seems this treatment was to punish him for his new ideas that seemed to disrespect their way of life. Attempts on his life were also made on several occasions, bad treatment of Muslims:- Bilal had a boulder put on his chest, there was a boycott put on supplies this caused people to go hungry, Muhammad’s daughters were abused.
Pre Islamic Arabia did not conform to Islamic faith, things present at this time included usury, idol worship, unlimited polygamy, female infanticide, drunkenness, sexual immorality. It was these things that the people of Arabia lived by and they considered it to be the ‘norm’ and Muhammad was asking them to forget the way they have lived for many years. Not only do I think this was the reason for Muhammad’s miss treatment but he was very straight to the point and did not tread lightly it was think that I think offended people as he was not cautious of upsetting anyone. It seemed to them that he was not offering an appealing alternative but a forced way of life. Muhammad in some aspects failed to be clear the incident with the satanic verses caused confusion, he almost compromised with the polytheists by giving them another form to pray to but after learning he had been fooled, so he corrected this. I believe this to have pushed the people of pre Islamic Arabia further away from accepting Islam.
Although brief, I hope it gave you some sort of insight and possibly you enjoyed the read? Let me know your thoughts on the topic.
