This week's guest blogger is Ella Day and she will be telling us all about Muhammad's First Revelation.
Hello fellow theologians!
Need information on the first revelation?
Muhammad in Makkah... a well respected man and rather average, illiterate. He was the chosen one by Allah to be the messenger of God.
Angel Jibrail appeared in a vision to Muhammad and commanded him to recite (iqra). He answered the Angel - "I cannot read nor write!" and he felt a gripping force as if he was being squeezed, this happened 3 times as he recited and was suddenly able to read due to this supernatural happening.
"Read in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher who created, created man out of mere clot of blood" -Surah 96
Muhammad went home to his wife Khadija in shock, he thought he was going insane, she believed him and told him his experience was genuine. He was the messenger of God and had a responsibility.
"According to Islam, Muhammad's first revelation was the event in which Muhammad was visited by the angel Jibrail who revealed to him a verse from the Quran. The event took place in a cave called Hira, located on the mountain called Jabal an-Noor, near Mecca."
Muhammad was a sheep herder and so spent much time on the mountain, being secluded this area was perfect for his vision to occur.
Muhammad being "nothing more than a sheep herder", although being respected, not many believed him being the messenger of God (rasulullah) or worthy of being a profit, and so it isn't surprising that his first follower was Khadija and his household grew as a group of Muslims before he went public in 613 CE, which was a while as to begin with he thought he was going insane and even contemplated killing himself. After a while his group of companions grew and people began listening to him, he became a great political, religious and moral leader.
